How can I pause the movie untill an action takes place?

Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a "button" that I want the user to click on to simulate that they are opening up another "window". I was using the following:
On mouseUp
if the doubleClick then
go to X
end if
end

It doesn't seem to work. The movie advances to the next frame with or without the user double clicking on the appropriate "button"

I'm sure there is a simple answer. I am very new to Lingo and Director 7. Can anyone reccomend a good Lingo teaching book with lessons?
