We have an Exchange 2000 server with few users. Last week it crashed, and to my surprise it mounted the exchange drive again. All the emails copies of the drive were gone.
Not very critical, but what surprised me is; all the emails in the user's machines(their Microsoft outlook were gone.)May be everything resides on the server. Can you please tell me how I can make all the emails for the users to reside thier clients in their machines.Just incase we have another crash. We have back up this time. I am new to this thing.

Thanks

Configure the clients for POP3. You can use outlook express or microsoft outlook as client s/w.

With Outlook connected to Exchange you can can go File-> Work offline to setup offline folders. This means all emails reside on your client HD and can be read even when not connected to the network (in offline mode ie).
Basically a copy of the email is on the Exchange box as well as on the client's PC.

Have a look at these places for more details:

There are also many articles on the web relating to recovery of mailboxes using the offline files - mainly by converting them to PSt while in offline mode.

Good Luck.
