Hi

Sounds daft I know, but believe me, it'll be easier this way!

IT have upgraded me to Windows 7, and included Office 2007, sideloaded next to my old Office 2003.

I have several spreadsheets I use daily that don't like XL2007, and neither do I, frankly, so that's why they've doubled up for me. Nice IT Guys!

But...every time I open an excel workbook, it defaults to XL2007 How can I change this?

I have tried:
1. Right-clicking a ".xls" file, choosing "Open With" and navigating to ...OFFICE11/Excel.EXE and checking "always use this..." Doesn't work - opens in XL2007.
2. Going to Folder Options in Control Panel, and ... oh, I can't select the File Types tab because it's not there.

Of course, removing the 2 versions and reloading them 2003 first, then 2007 is not an option.

What can I do?

Chris

Someday I'll know what I'm donig...damn!

Did you see:
I havn't tried 2003 vs 2007 for Excel, but long ago have three versions of Access. I just created a shortcut for the version I wanted to use... HOWEVER (yes, there is always a gotcha...) I think there was a frustrating delay as Microsoft would go change the many registry keys that needed to point to correct places -- and that's going both ways. We had 2003 as our 'base' deployment, yet had to test in 2007 to make sure those souls version would still work.

Good Luck,
Wayne

If you launch Excel first, then open the file, you will always get the desired version of Excel. If you double-click a file, it will open into whichever version of Excel is already open.

Access and Word have the frustrating delay for registry keys when you launch them and have multiple versions installed. The cure is a .bat file that sets a NoReg key. I don't use Access, but here is the required .bat file for Word (I have a lot of versions installed on my laptop).
Code:
REM Add a key to Windows registry telling Word not to re-register itself (with annoying delay) whenever a different version launches. Code addresses Word 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2010.
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options" /v "NoReReg" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options" /v "NoReReg" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options" /v "NoReReg" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options" /v "NoReReg" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options" /v "NoReReg" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

hi,

Has your IT installed the compatability pack?

Frankly, I felt the same way about Excel 2007 when our IT converted us. However, with the compatablity pack, ANY 90-2003 version can open and run in 2007. I have not found a 2003 workbook that does not. At present, there are very few 2003 hangers-on.

We also had installed, a set of application feature mapping aids. It took several weeks, but now I am a champion of 2007 features. 2007 is so much better than the previous version!!! It is well worth the effort to transform your mind.

If your IT has not made a complete conversion, ie officially condoning running 2003 & 2007, then shame on them! You really do not want to have to deal with developing 2007+ capabilities (.xls*) and then chopping them off via SaveAs 97-2003 {.xls).

Just my 2 cents that has good scents and makes good sense to me.
