I am looking for a simple way to make a cog, but it has to have a see thru (cut out) in the center, basically i tried using the star, and setting the radius to bout 1.85 inches, amd set it to 100 pts, which works pretty well cept that its a solid the outside edge looks good, i just need a way to hollow out the center some. any suggestions?

Yeah looked into it, and sure thats how you go about it, trouble is I am having issues getting the result. I mean i could do it with a stroke and the circle tool, but I can't apply a gradient the way i want, i just want a circle gradient with a hollow center so u can see stuff behind it
