I would like to do as the question in the simplest possible way whilst leaving the ability to type in URLs into the address bar. Please help.

i believe all you need is to right-click on the ie icon on your desktop, goto to properties, and type whatever address you want in the text box.

Sorry mate - I need it to STAY as its set, eg it stays set to an intranet homepage or msn.com or thehun.com - whatever.

Maybe I am not understanding, but if you put an address in the textbox I have specified, that is the location you will be taken to every time the browser is opened.

Try this:

Correct your home page to the one you prefer, then immediately do the following:

Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Right-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel.
Right-click on the Control Panel, chose new>DWORD value, name it Homepage. Right-click
on Homepage, choose modify and type in the number 1.

This should lock your home page, so no other web site can change it.

Then navigate here and verify the homepage is correct:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
look for the Start Page entry.

Hope this helps.

Download & install a small freeware program called StartPage Gaurd. It has a small footprint so doesn't use a lot of resources (file is 485 bytes). Choose your Start Page then run program, it will prevent any other programs from changing your home page but will let you do it. It is freeware. Can get it at most software sites (cnet etc.). I've used it for several weeks now with no problems on IE 6.
