I have a need to install IE5.5 on XP professional. Due to compatibility with government web sites on our intranet. It's a long story but we are municipal with one-way trust to upper-tier (provincial)and use resources on thier intranet web site.

I have un-installed Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer that came with XP--re-booted, then when I attempted to install IE5.5 and get msg that says "Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system" "Setup can not continue"

I am assuming that something in the registry needs to be changed to reflect the fact the newer Internet Explorer is not still installed.

Can anyone help or send me in the right direction? Thank you muchly,

Ernie Ernie

I think I have solved this myself.
The solution seems a little brute force but here's what I did:

In the registry via regedit I went to:
HKey Local Machine ---> Software---> Microsoft--->

At this point I deleted the complete folder Internet Explorer;

I then re-installed IE5.5 from CD.

Now I have XP with IE5.5 and I works fine. Ernie

I deleted that same folder from the registry and I am still getting the message that setup detected a newer version. Any ideas?

How would one go about uninstalling IE6 from XP?

Do you get an error message saying 'you need Explorer4.x or higher to view this web page'? If so, the easiest thing to do is edit the registry.

With explorer 6 they changed to way the version was held in the registry. Run regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and change the version number from 6.0.2600.0000 to 6.00.2600.000 and the pages will work properly.

This key alteration also works for programs that report that they need a newer version of explorer than V4.5 when they are installing.
