I would like to know how to increase the traffic to my website and generate more sales. It was set up in March so I realise that it has not been running for long. I would appreciate any advice (or criticism!) regarding my site which is

shellj,

The first thing I would suggest is replacing the large sale image with something that describes what the purpose of your site is.

I looked at the front page of your site and it took some time to find what you actually sold.

I asked the fiance to look as she is your target audience and she had no idea what the site was at first glance. Only when she clicked the shop/browse link was it clear. Now she wants me to buy her half your stock. [cry]

Hope this helps

Thanks Chris for this info - some good pointers there.

Thanks to you too Wullie - and to your fiance! Just out of interest, would i be better using text to inform shoppers or images - just thinking about what looks better!

use both! images are of no use to search engines but are good for the visitors and some well written copy is perfect for both and can certainly improve the conversions.

One thing to look at getting rid of is the viewstate code that the .net shopping cart is planting in the pages. while it can speed up the page rendering slightly it also adds a lot of overhead for the SE crawlers to parse through.

Thank you Chris. I have one problem - our website was designed and setup by a company and there is only so much editing i can do. It seems we have an administration template of sorts which allows us to edit the basics of the site ie input text, images etc, add new stock, view/edit orders etc but we cannot change any code! But thanks for the tip which I will be sure to ask about when I speak to the programmer.

when you do ask, there is one important point for SEO and that is the page title. It needs to be different for each page, It is about the only point that all engines do agree on for rankings!

Get your programmer to read up on SEO or find one who already does.
