I just got a 250GB internal HD and a box for it that allows it to be run externally via USB. The problem is, the computer only sees 127GB of my 250GB drive.

I am runnning WXP on a laptop, toshiba satellite 2435 computer--(no dick drive)I just bought this computer last year so should still be in date--

Please help mee figure out how to access all 250Gb of my external Harddrive

thanks

That may very well be the case.. (I can only guess that possibly the because the USB interface uses so "few" cables that this presents a prob for 48bit LBA)
However, i "think" ibdunn may have overlooked two things possibly;
-- when at 48bitLBA.com, he didn't punch in his IDE onboard controller, thinking it isn't used in his situation(USB interface,....the usb interface sees removeable drives as scsi devices, and the IDE controller is utilized to read/control/transfer data to/from the external disc)
-- when I was at WD site, I saw it said the drive "needed" to be jumpered as Single/Master for 48bitLBA......again, ibdunn failed to see this, utilize the info, and change the Jumper on the drive.

BTW, happyd/l -ers little 48bitLBA.inf file is only necessary for Win2000,......not with XP with Service Pack 1

so how have you deduced all my actions?? you're right on the first part there as far as punching in the ide onboard controller -- still don't know what that is or what i was supposed to do there - - i did jumper the drive as single master - so you're wrong there... by the way it's 'she' not 'he'...

recent post on usb not seeing it very interesting....

ok ibdunn;
i wasn't trying to attack you, so chill a little [smile]
it "seemed" that you didn't jumper as master cause there is no reply that you "had" finally done that. I thought my instigation would bring you to finally reply (just kidding)..and then I'd know whether or not you tried the Master setting....[2thumbsup]
thanx for replying
we all can learn from this, and whether you're a he/she makes no diff to me [pipe]

Well, As I last reported, I was headded to a desktop to partition and format my WD250 drive.. I installed it in a older desktop that even after updating the bios it would not recognise the entire 250 Gig, Actually 232 Gig in 2's based math.

anyway I figured I am here why not run WD's 'Data Lifeguard Tools' and see what happens.. Well, by using the 'advanced' menu I was able to tell WD to build a 250 gig NTFS partition for Windows XP to use and the tools did that..

I have now placed the drive in my external USB box and my laptop see it as 250 gig and I am writing data to it right now..

So I am happy and my setup is working as expected..

Did you do this while it was connected to the Old Desktop ATA interface "or" while using the USB case and cable connected to newer sys??? 232GB ain't too bad [smile] unless 2 partitions i suspect?

sorry--didn't mean to seem testy...this is an awesome forum which i've used mostly for software related stuff...but appreciate having a resource for troubleshooting such as this...

i still don't get the part u referred to here...
"when at 48bitLBA.com, he didn't punch in his IDE onboard controller, thinking it isn't used in his situation(USB interface,....the usb interface sees removeable drives as scsi devices, and the IDE controller is utilized to read/control/transfer data to/from the external disc)"

but have been using my hardrive successfully as 2 drives and that has actually been the best thing I could have done for my needs as it turns out.... but am planning to get another 250drive to use as a backup to this one....i'm not real happy with the size of box i had to get to use it externally - -any good resources out there for converting an internal to an external with as small an enclosure as possible??

hi, can someone help me with my problem of the 137gb max? i bought a WD 200gb hd, and i only see 127 gb approx. i have the k8n neo platinum, and windows xp pro, with the sp1 installed. can someone show me how to get all 200 gb?

Did you by any chance read all of the above?

yea, i read some of it. i was wondering if anyone could be so kind as to direct me with a link for an update? or simple directions?

avtually...i tried a tonne of stuff...wound up partitioning my 250 into 2 drives ....so as much as i tried i was stuck with the partitioning routine and am still using that drive that way

If the BIOS recognizes all 200gb, then go into Disk Management and allocate the unused space.
Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
In Computer Management, select Storage -> Disk Management
links;
if BOOT Drive
Non Boot drive
