I have been unable to install a 3com 905b or a 3com 509b in an IBM 365 #658914u dual Pentium 200. I've followed 3com's instructions to the letter but no results.

The card appears but does not connect to our 10mb Ethernet network

I'm running nt40 service pack 3

Trying pinging your server, yourself, and an outside IP Address to see if your card is working properly.
Best of Luck.
Joe

Things I would check for:

-look at link lights on card and hub just to make sure there is a physical connection (simple, I know...but it's happened to me... :)

-run 3c509cfg.exe to see if card is in PnP mode or not, and verify address and IRQ settings

-double check to see if protocols are bound to the card

-If using TCP/IP, double check IP address, subnet mask etc...

-Also, NT40 takes a while to be "seen" on the network after it first boots up, you may just have to leave it for a couple of minutes.

hope this helps...
Run the config utility, and check the duplex settings and speed settings. I have seen them not connect (no link LED) just because the media type was set to Auto. Changing to 10MBps may just fix it. Also, the duplex settings default to Auto. Does your hub, or switch support full duplex? If not, switch your card to half duplex.

Bottom line, dont depend on 3Com's "Auto" settings for anything. Run the config utility, and specify everything.

How do I change the duplex settings on and ibm 365x thinkpad? I'm told to run a config program but I can't
find it
Thanks

The config utility is a DOS-based one, usually provided on a diskette with the card, or from their web site.

Boot your unit with a boot diskette so it will not load windows, and stop at a DOS prompt. Then insert the diskette with your config utility, or exceute it from your hard drive if you D/L'd it.

After running the config utility, re-boot your machine. [sig]
Tom Whitehead
twhitehead@commeq.com

[/sig]
