with the command lsdev -Cc disk i've got :

hdisk0 Available 10-60-00-10,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
hdisk1 Available 10-60-00-11,0 Other SCSI Disk Drive

and with lspv :

hdisk0 000b423d09705319 rootvg
hdisk1 none None

How can i change the description hdisk1 in :
hdisk1 Available 10-60-00-11,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive

and assigned a physical volume identifier (PVID) to hdisk1?
I try whit cfgmgr -l scsi0; cfgmgr ; rmdev -dl hdisk1 ;chdev -l hdisk1 -a pv=yes; but....nothing !!
Thank you.

Nanduz,

Create a volume group on hdisk1 - the reducevg <vgname> hdisk1. The creation of the volume group will assign a PVID and the VG removal will make it available again. The chdev command will only work if the disk has already been assigned a PVID and I assume that this is a brand new disk?

Secondly, in relation to the description it is obviously not the same type of disk as hdisk0 or the system would have use the same description, check out lsattr -El <hdisk> for each disk the ROS level and ID will most likely be different. The only way to do this is to remove and re-add the disk manually specifying the type, to be honest I would leave it alone, but it is up to you.

Cheers

Hello,
do lscfg -vl hdisk1 - or lscfg -vp hdisk1 to see who made the disk.

1.It's also possible that the disk was exported.

Try:

importvg -y VGname hdiskX

2.The description is defined by a stanza loaded by the system,it's not simply user changable, unless you want to play with stanzas (not recommended !!!) "Long live king Moshiach !"

I think the device description is read from the disk firmware... correct me if I'm wrong.

levw,

Yes, it reads the information from this stanza to display the device description to the user, but the stanza information is received from the disks firmware. Regards,
Chuck

If this disk the same as hdisk0 it mins hdisk1 is bad.

With "chdev -l hdisk1 -a pv=yes" i've got this message :
Method error (/etc/methods/chgdisk):
0514-047 Cannot access a device.

and when i try to add a volume group on hdisk1 i've a lot of errors like :

0516-024 mkvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run
diagnostics.
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
0516-1254 mkvg: Changing the PVID in the ODM.
Method error (/etc/methods/chgdisk):

0516-024 mkvg: Unable to open physical volume.
Either PV was not configured or could not be opened. Run

0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
0516-304 mkvg: Unable to find device id in the Device
Configuration Database.
0516-324 mkvg: Unable to find PV identifier for physical volume.
The Device Configuration Database is inconsistent for physical

What's happening ?
Thanks

Smells to me that the disk is ba dor there is a connectivity (scsi) problem.

1.Run "errpt|grep hdisk1"

2.Run "dd if=/dev/hdisk1 bs=512 count=2" to verify the disk is accessible. "Long live king Moshiach !"

...or the DASD is not IBM flavor. The RS6000 (and I assume all IBM hardware) is very picky and generally only likes IBM components. IBM drives have much more stuff going on in the firmware than you might think.

Hello,
The hdisk is not a IBM disk. If it is not IBM disk it is not going to work.
How put this disk in the system.

If the DASD doesn't work, it doesn't work. Perhaps it is simply a bad drive but an IBM disk is recommended for optimal compatibility and correct error reporting.

Hello,
I wonder why people ask for help and when they are told to try the command and put the results on this forum, they do not do the steps that is required of the person looking for help.

For example lscfg -vl hdisk1 or lscfg -vp hdisk1 command to see who is the manufacture of the hdisk1.

So the person asking for help get the right help and we can move on helping someone else needing help.

If person asking for help does not do the suggested step then that person should not be asking for help.
