Does anyone know how I can burn a 1.7 gig DVD to 3 or 4 cds?
I am running OS 10.4.10 on an Intel Imac.

Jimoblak: Under system requirements, from Apple website, for 10.4 upgrade, Apple says you need a dvd drive.

I had a similar problem with 10.3 on a g3 b&w. I bought 10.3 from OWC. No matter what I did, firmware etc, it refused to boot from the 10.3 cd. I did the "install on outboard drive - CCC thing" and it worked. I wasn't trying to steal anything. I was just trying to get it to work

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

To jimoblak and jimbopalmer I would still lilke for someone to explain how piracy comes into play if I or anyone else backs up their OS DVD on CD's

So you are saying that one would be silly to purchase OSX10.4 if they did not have a DVD drive. Hmmm... This supports my second assumption.

I never explicitly said piracy was involved. I only suspected it. I said either piracy is involved or someone is being too stupid to exchange the media for CD-ROM. Take your pick.

Have you or your friend called Apple sales yet to see about an exchange? What more are you expecting from this thread?

Making CDs from a DVD is the absolute last option I would try after being unable to use an external DVD-ROM, target disk mode, etc. If making a CD set from a DVD was such a reasonable option, why is it so difficult to Google for that info?

Grab a DVD-ROM drive for $20 and save some trouble.

To further clarify...

The only reason why I can imagine why someone would not contact Apple for the CD-ROM media is that they were never a legitimate licensee of the original DVD media. It is such a simple matter that I am confused why anyone would be afraid to do it... unless they were sporting a wooden leg and a parrot on their shoulder. [bigsmile]

There is no legal problem with backing up your own licensed software. There is a problem with using someone else's DVD that was bundled with a newer computer to install on an older computer.

To jimoblak, apparently the reason you are still confused is because you don't read too well.
Originally I said my friend has his own legitimate DVD disk with OS 10.4. that he would like to burn to several CD's.
I also said I would like to burn my own Legimate disk with OS 10.4.x for the Intel iMac to DVD's because the file is too large too large to burn on one DVD and I would need to buy the DL or dual layer disks, which I don't feel like doing at the moment.
But is nice that you haven't accused me of piracy, that you only suspect me of piracy.

I read well enough. You might need to take a nap and try this all over again.

No one should attempt computer operation while drunk. You never said you wanted to burn a DL DVD. You said you wanted CDs from one DVD.

Why do you think a 1.7 GB DVD requires a dual layer DVD? You are swaying me from thinking this involves piracy. The issue is just pure lunacy.

You keep adding more silliness to this scenario with each of your posts. What is anyone supposed to believe?

To jimoblak
Lunacy, yes I agree.
You still aren't reading too well, I said my friend wants to burn a 1.7 gig DVD to several CD's.
I want to burn my Intel Mac OS 10.4.x on multiple DVD's or CD's which is stored on 2 DL disks and is too large to burn to a regular DVD.
If this is too complicated or hurting your brain, you can just ignore and quit posting at any time, but why do I have the feeling you aren't going to do that?

You're right. Your lunacy is too complicated for me. I gave up trying to help long ago when the answer to your friend's issue was given. I've just been toying with you to make fun of this ridiculous issue.

Note the message at the end of the article if you or your friend cannot follow the technical directions for a target disk install...

Alternate possibilities would be to get a set of OS X 10.4 install CDs from Apple or use an external USB or FireWire DVD-ROM drive that your Mac can boot from with the install DVD.

You started this thread with a very basic question:
Does anyone know how I can burn a 1.7 gig DVD to 3 or 4 cds?

Most any backup utility can split large files to break up to CD media. The problem you would face is that the very first CD must also include a bootable system. This appears to be well over your head so the options for target disk mode, installing a DVD drive, or contacting Apple for CDs would seem like your best options. It is no concern of mine if you want to continue wasting your time ranting about my alleged illiteracy. In the time you wasted on this thread, the OS could have been installed several times over.

To jimoblak
For your information the time I have wasted is less than or equal to the time you have wasted by toying with me with your irrelevent and useless answers.
Nice of you to admit that you are not really trying to help.
I just went to Roxio Toast's site and yes the latest version of Toast does seem to have the capability of splitting a large file to multiple CD's.
So feel free to waste more of your valuable time with more gibberish.

Like everything else, you misunderstand. I am not trying to help you anymore. Everyone has given you plenty to work with already.

Even if you get the latest Toast, you are not going to have success with splitting a bootable DVD on several bootable CDs. I think this was explained in a previous post that you did not read.

Hi jmgalvin
I just called Comp USA where I bought the iMac and they said that Apple no longer has the 10.4 CDs for sale.
I looked on eBay and someone with a Lombard has those 10.4 CDs for an eMac that he wants $50 for.
So I think the bottom line is my friend is going to just do the DVD install.
Thanks for the help.

I never said a word about piracy, what I said was you cannot force folks to give advice they feel is inappropriate. Had I felt you were advocating piracy I would have 'red flagged' this thread and it would be removed from Tek-Tips. (that is a hyperlink directly under every post)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

You know I really dont' see that much of an advantage for 4 over 3.

We had 10.3 on all our machines. We bought some G5 leftover Imacs from Apple at a good discount. In the box Apple included the 10.4 upgrade and newer iapps. I never got around to installing 10.4

We just got in some new macbooks about a month ago, with 10.4. I set them up and really did not perceive any advantage of 10.3.

Me neither, until I saw that the new ipods appear to require such, although there's mixed evidence. Guess I'll put off purchase until Leopard is out and the reports start coming in. Perhaps Steve J. will announce a 3G iPhone next week and I'll really be in a quandry!
