Does anyone know how I can burn a 1.7 gig DVD to 3 or 4 cds?
I am running OS 10.4.10 on an Intel Imac.

There seems to be more to the question that is not being asked.

Are the contents of the DVD one large file? If so, what type?

I have a friend who wants to put OS 10.4 on an older G4 Mac, but it will not read the DVD.
I remember with the old 1 meg floppies I have had as many as 20 disks to install programs and such.
Also with my install disks for the newer iMac, I can't make a back up of that disk because it is too large for a DVD.
I just wonder if there is a program that will allow you to break a large file like that down and copy to several smaller files that will burn to CD's

Digging into this it seems that the best way to install Tiger on a CD-only Mac is to install a DVD-Rom drive first.

...or to contact Apple for CD-ROM media as noted in the tech doc.

10.4 was available on CD at one point. You might want to hurry with any requests from Apple as I suspect any overstock 10.4 media will be pitched when 10.5 is released very soon.

But yes, a DVD ROM drive can be acquired quite cheaply now and would greatly enhance any old computer (that supports it).

On the basis that you're close by, could you not take your Mac over to your friend's place and connect their machine in Target disk mode to yours with a FW cable?

You could then image the DVD onto their Mac, assuming there is sufficient space and that your Tiger disk contains a universal install. (I'm also assuming that if you tried doing an install from your Intel Mac to their machine in target disk mode, the installer would choose the Intel version)

driex,

The install disk needs to boot the machine; I don't think you can boot from a disk image.

Obvious Troll,
I've never tried it, but the plan of action assumed one could start the installer from the disk image after a 'normal' boot.
If one can't, then yes, the suggestion of the loan or purchase of a DVD-ROM drive would seem best, followed by the request for CDs from Apple.

I just re-read this thread and realized that you are apparently trying to violate the license of your copy of 10.4.

Your 10.4 DVD is for your use only. Tek-tips is not supposed to be supporting piracy.

If your friend bought 10.4 for his computer, he would have purchased the CD version.

If you go back and read my original question, you will seed there is no license violation.
My friend has several Mac computers and has bought his own legitimate version of 10.4 from Apple, but it is on a 1.7 gig DVD.
As far as I know every OS and other programs I have bought allow you to make a back up copy for your own use only.
Therefore if he can transfer his legitimate version of OS 10.4 to 4 CD's rather than another DVD would you like to tell me where that violates his license aggrement?

Yes, you can make backups for your own use but I am confused why someone would purchase the DVD version of an OS if they only had a CD-capable computer. It seemed that your friend was using media that they did not correctly acquire themselves. That is like buying a copy of WinXP for the G4. It just makes no sense.

Grab a DVD reader.

Yes I do agree that you do seem somewhat confused, accusing people of illegal activity.
But to get back to the original question, "Does anyone know how to burn a 1.7 gig DVD to several CD's", I am going to assume that no one knows if there is a program that allows you to do that.

I think you might be stuck. I put in 10.4 disc and burned an an image. It came out at 2.5 gigs.

The problem comes in that, when you open the image, everyting is in normal alphabetical order so, if you moved the contents to 4 cds, you might not have them in the proper order for booting.

If you can use a 10.4 disc to install 10.4 on an outboard drive, you could download Carbon Copy Cloner from versiontracker and use that to clone the outboard drive to your friends g4.

I'd thought of that as a solution, but discounted it as I had assumed the install would be Intel-specific, given that IMacQuarker has an Intel Mac. (Since I have a G4 and Panther, I can't test this).

Don't be silly. What you stated in this thread with your own words indicates that someone is either violating a license or is too dumb to exchange their software for the proper media.

If they needed CD media, they would have bought CD media. If they mistakenly bought DVD media, they can exchange it for CD media. It is that simple.

Everyone has offered useful advice on how to install from a DVD on a computer with out a DVD drive - - which leads me to believe the latter of my suspicions.

But to get back to the original question, "Does anyone know how to burn a 1.7 gig DVD to several CD's"
Yes. I know and probably others do as well. But the effort required is more than what is simply required to exchange the purchased media.

This is simple, we do not need to give help in situations WE feel are inappropriate. No tantrum on the part of the asker can force us to do what we do not want.

The nice folks have shown you how to buy the OS on CD, the way you need it. They have shown you how to use the DVD you have. If you need OSX for more than one computer, check out the Family Pack, the legal way to share the OSX you buy for up to 5 macs in your home.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Jimbopalmer: As far as I know it only comes on dvd. The link you provided says it comes of dvd. As far as I know, Apple stated that 10.4 was only available on dvd when it was introduced. If it's available on cd, Apple doesn't nake it easy to find.

Imacquarker's friend simply bought 10.4 and couldn't install because his machine does not have a dvd drive, so Imacquarker is just trying to figure out a way to get, the duly purchased, 10.4 onto his friend's machine.

Imacquarker: To do what I said might help, you'd have to get the 10.4 dvd from your friend. Don't use the specific one that came with an imac.

jmgalvin, Apple does offer 10.4 as an optional CD distribution. Just ask them. I have a set.

Mac OS X 10.4 tip: If your computer ejects the Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Install DVD, your Mac probably doesn't have an Apple internal DVD drive or Apple SuperDrive, in which case you'll need Mac OS X 10.4 Install CDs. (If it does have an Apple DVD-ROM drive yet still ejects the disc, see this document.) If you need Mac OS X 10.4 Install CDs, check out the Mac OS X Upgrade website.

The above is quoted from the Apple tech article I posted some time ago. It is not difficult to smell fish in this thread.
