Running win98se. Loaded an application that requires blocking a specific port, 1583. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You will need to install a firewall, like Norton Internet Security or such..

Ah...I see. I'm using a Linksys Router so I go to Filtering and specify a tcp port and range there. Does that sound like it might work?

HI,
I ran that system utility that tells you what you have on your confuser. It lists every thing I have & one of the contents is Ports. I have Port 139 Open using WIN/98! I'm a "newbie" & I have no idea how or if I should close this port? Can someone please help me? Thank you, just Larry sawhorse

pagel,

That should work as long as the router is BLOCKING that port, not routing it!

sawhorse,

I believe that port 139 is one of those ports needed for chatting online. You should be okay, but be careful! Don't accept files from people you don't know, etc. Just be careful...

Port 139 is used for NetBIOS Session Service. It has to be open if you are on WinNT network and using WINS services or NetBIOS applications. If you are a home user, you can probably block it.

Good luck.

To Matt, Boka, and reghakr.......excellent info, problem solved. Many thanks, you guys are great. I am curious what "System Utility" that Sawhorse is referring to. Probably System Information?

HI, I want to thank so many great folks for trying to help this "newbie". The responces were very informative. I don't understand most of what some people said. One reply from Matt said that if I do any chatting it should be open. But, he warned me to be careful about who I chat with. I only have a couple of friends that I chat with now so, I'm just going to leave it open. Thanks Again for all the Help. Larry ps:I thought that HaHaHa was done going around? I got one today to delete! I an using Norton 2002 & also got a worm that it can't fix? It is called:joke.exe,name:W95Hybris.worm. I have no idea what it is supposed to do? No Good, I'm sure. Anyway, Thangs again. sawhorse
