How 2600 can be accessed with laptop not have serial port

Hello all,
I have 2600 series router which i can access via
roll over cable connecting console port using hyperterm
from xp.
Now i want to connect it via my Toshiba laptop which seems do not have any serial port. It has 15 pin vga and ps2
and usb port. I do not want to buy usb to serial converter which cost 20+ dollars.
Can i use ethernet cable in some way to connect this using
telnet? But i do not have any internet at home too. So may not be possible to set ip for it.
I will be doing all this to learn and practice the commands for the exam.
Can any one help?

If it's for learning/practice, I'd highly recommend spending the $$ on the usb to serial converter.

Thanks for the site.
Should i buy (DB9M - USB A Male)converter?(as i have rj45-female db9)
it says it can support ISDN terminal adpaters(which i assume cisco 2600 one of it) through your USB port with up to 230kbps data transfer rate.
But when in hyperterm we choose com port i dont see com1
it has com9 to com17 and com3 will it be ok with com3?

I forgot to tell my os.
It is vista. By default which does not have hyperterm.
so i had to install it.

That sounds like the right converter.

Instead of hyperterm, you might want to try something like putty and the putty connection manager too.

To avoid buying the cable you could setup the router for telnet and then use a crossover cable to access the router from the Laptop.

Trash HyperTerm (and Vista, if you can!)---dual boot to Ubuntu, at least!lol HyperTerm and Windows are viruses...

I strongly recommend Todd's suggestion...PuTTy, Tera Term or SecureCRT---all free.
