I am an entry-level programmer with a degree in Computer & Information Science. I was asked by a prospective employer how much I would charge per hour, as an independent contractor, to write programs in Microsoft Visual C++. I live in the Houston area and I was wondering what would be a fair price to ask per hour? Thanks!

Look round a few jobs boards in your area (use google to find them). See what rates are being charged for what skills and figure it out.

So long as you pick something reasonable, the rest is negotiation.

i live in canada... but for a first job (as a developer) about $20 canadian is reasonable. i would say somehwere between 15-20 US should be reasonable..

I would check what monster.com has to say. They can give you a good estimate based on your skills and location. There are other sites as well that will tell you what you are worth. You just have to find them.

You may also want to contact a university job placement office in the area and ask what the average graduate is making on entry level.

Thanks for all your help and input!
