Hi
I went to see a disabled friend who is having problems with her Travelmate X-550. The system just freezes after 5 minutes, and then must be allowed to cool. I noticed that she has been using the machine in bed, and has been placing the computer straight onto the blankets. This has been effectively blocking the cooling fan for ages, and it seems now that overheating has caused some sort of 'weak joint' which when heated fails. Whilst cooling, the Acer cannot be powered up because the 'PC Card' logo stays up. It must be allowed to cool completely before it will work again.
What is it likely to be? Is there going to be something on the circuit board which could do with a drop of solder? Is this fixable?
Help much appreciated !

I assume you are now operating it on a hard surface, but it still overheats.

If she has been using it on the blanket, the cooling fan be clogged with fibres. It could be as simple as that.

Cheers,
Brodie

Thanks cbs604
I took the panel off and in the fan was a big lump of fluff. I removed it but sadly the problem still exists. I have undertaken to try to get the data off the disk, and have made another thread about NTLDR missing..
