This depends by distro - for Redhat you can just edit /etc/sysconfig/network and change the "HOSTNAME=' line. For some old apps you may need to also use /etc/HOSTNAME . I believe that the above anwser (/etc/host.conf) is correct for Suse linux, however.
Hmmm - thats interesting. /etc/host.conf is generally used in relation to name resolution ordering (although nowadays /etc/nsswitch.conf often takes precedence). See -->
Gauke - actually I didn't mean to imply what you said was wrong at all. There are often multiple ways of achieving the same thing in linux and that way may well work for redhat. So thanks for your post - I'll try it out...
