In your host file you can point a domain to an ip like this:

127.0.0.1 listentomanchester.co.uk

is it possible to point:

127.0.0.1
???

Am I doing something wrong?

I am currently testing a site I am building on my local machine.

I want to be able to type into my browser and be directed to the test site hosted on my machine.

Currently, it points at an online server.

How do I point it at 127.0.0.1??

Have you checked for the presence of a HOSTS file in other directories?

Have you imported the entries in your HOSTS file yet?

What OS are you using?
