My OS is: win 98
MY HP model # is: 8750c
My HP computer has a very bad problem locking up (freezing) when I am using any type of program. especial outlook express, Internet Explorer, and when I am on the internet. I am unable to find any solution to this problem from anyone I know. I have formated the computer before, many times, and the computer still continues to freeze. when it freezes, I recieve no error message, mouse doesn't move, computer does not respond to any keyboard comands (ie. ctrl, alt, delete) and this happends rather often, rendering the computer almost useless! it normally does not freeze when playing hi-resource games, even when played for hours. but freezes when creating images for web pages! If yall have any information to help me, please give me any solution available! I really am desprate for help!

Have you been to the HP site, partitcularly for possible updated video drivers? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Have you noticed anything flaky with the video, such as lines across the screen weren't there before? Try re-seating your video card and checking your monitor connection. A bad or loose video card can cause these types of problems.

I have the updated video driver and updated bios. Nothing helps! (256 megs of ram!!!) Video card has gotten a little slow (sometimes freezes for a sec in games) I'm buying a new one right now! :)

This sounds like a typical Win 98 problem. My old pc has Win 98 and I've had alot of similar problems. It would lock up all the time for no reason. I have since gotten a new pc with Win XP, it's far better! I'd try that if you can afford it...

Defenately can't afford a new PC! :) But I bought a 64 meg geforce PCI card, and it arived 2 days ago. So far no lock-ups! Hopefully this was the fix! I'll post if it didn't!

Sounds like bygeek was correct. Many HP's have built on video/ sound/modem, and all these use the systems memmory. There is no "dedicated" video memmory, and it is all "stolen" from your ram. Disabling the builton, and adding your own videocard was the best thing you could do. Also, your sound card (if build on) is most likely software based (it emulates a sound card) and that also steals from your ram. As does the built on modem. Built on modems are almost always software based (and now so are many PCI modems) and these "modem emulators" steal ram even further. If you notice more system problems while on the internet, try an external hardware modem, or a hardware based PCI modem.

I'd like to state for the record here that if it doesn't print, it shouldnt be made by HP!

hasn't froze on the internet yet, or anywhere else, except when playing a hi resource game demo I downloaded called medal of honor. But I'm not gonnna wory bout that for now. Thanks Yall!

I've also had this problem. I've tried to add a video card but the machine won't even boot the bios! HP has said that the video card is probably incompatible. Do you have the steps to disable the onboard video? You can't disable in the bios? Thank you.

Just inserting a new video card should not prevent the system from booting. Did your new card say it was compatible with your o/s? Can you boot into safe mode? What is your o/s?

You should be able to disable the onboard video from the device manager.

Try reseating the current Video card and remove and reseat the RAM . they often cause the symptoms you describe.

I did disable the video (basically setting the drivers to VGA) in device manager. The card I was trying is a cheaper 4MB SIS card. This model of HP doesn't have a video card, the video is the on-board video of the motherboard. You cannot disable it in the BIOS however. I saw that someone else had gotten a PCI GeForce 64MB card, which I may try.

The weird thing is that the machine will freeze during SCANDISK, and even in Safe Mode. Now I did change the video to standard VGA and it seemed to have no problem while I had it with this driver, but then again, it could've been a good day. I'm running windows 98 se with 191MB ram and the 30G hard drive with more than half available.

running programs are causing scandisk to stop(I THINK). you can run scandisk in safemode or not.Go to pcpitstop.com ,there after testing your system you will see a link... which will lead you to a autofix program which will load scandisk and run it on startup before these programs load. it will only load and run one time, then gone,(temp file)

I found the Solution!

The 8750c is UNSTABLE when it uses the
667 mhz processor. It WILL lock up after as
little as 10 minutes of Internet (ebay) scrolling.

Replacing the video card will help but does NOT
cure the problem.

REPLACING the processor will make the PC solid
as a rock. Forcing the PC to a 100 Mhz FSB CURES
the instability.

I replaced the processor with a 700 mhz processor
with a 100 Mhz FSB. Specifically:
700mhz/256/100/1.65v.

Alternately you can close pins FS3 on the motherboard
which will FORCE the FSB to 100mhz but will also slow
the PC to 500 mhz.

Please note that both the processor change or the FS3
closure solution do NOT require a new video card.

Neither of these solutions are for an amateur but are
pretty easy for a computer pro.

I would like to emphasize that both of these solutions
are TESTED and do work.

I know have twp prefectly stable 8750cs.

Good luck with yours.

My W98 used to freeze up after I installed Homeworld.
System would simply freeze even though HW wasn't being used!
I always thought that this was a 'simple' software conflict, but have since determined that the graphics card/RAM just wasn't up to scratch.
Have you installed any power/memory hungray games recently?
