I'm still a n00b with Illustrator and can't figure out how to merge shapes together.

I'm using the Rectangle and Ellipse tools to create two circles, and a rectangle connecting them, kinda like a sucker with candy on both ends.

They all have a .75 border around them, but what I want to do is merge them together so the border is around the edge of all of them as one object.

How do I do this???

select all objects find your pathfinder palette and hit merge (top left icon in the palette)

Ahh I didn't have that palette even showing... thank you!!! That's exactly what I was looking for. Woohooo!
