I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me with this. Attempting to solve this has cost me an embarassing amount of hours.

What I have is 2 computers that are plugged into a hub. Both computers have internet access. I want one computer (Computer 1) to be able to access the other computer's(Computer 2) C: drive. Obviously I do not want other people from the internet to be able to access this.

What I have done: 1. I used network wizard to create a home network. 2. I went into advanced file sharing mode on both computers (via tools->options and unchecking the appropriate option) 3. Unshared the default shared folder. 4. Created a new share (a default one was already created) for the C: drive on Computer 2.

The Problem: The ONLY way I have been able to access Computer 2's C: drive is if I ensure that "Everyone" can read/write under share permissions and security permissions. I have another account on the computer called "Student," and if I remove the "Everyone" permissions and add "Student" permissions then I cannot access the drive from Computer 1. It says "Workgroup is unaccessible.... Access is denied." I must be missing something because how can I be denied access when I never received a box to login to the remote computer (as "Student")? Please tell me how I can fix this.

Thanks

Is simplifed sharing enabled/disabled on these machines? Disable it, and either set up account on Computer 2 with same username/password as you log onto Computer 1 with (leave 'Everyone') - which will just give you access - or if otherwise it should now prompt for username/password (ie, valid username/password for Computer 2).

The 'Everyone' is only on the LAN - not over the internet (you'd need to explictly enable sharing over the internet connection...)

Thank you for your fast reply. I can now access the folders without a problem (and the other computers on the LAN cannot access them).

Could someone please answer these questions

1. How come when I have the windows firewall enabled I cannot access my folders? This seems weird since it is enabled by the wizard.

2. How do I ensure that I am not sharing files over the internet or that I have not made a security whole?

Thanks

The firewall will be sufficient. If you really want to lock down your little LAN, then disable Netbios over TCP/IP and install Netbui:
This will gaurantee that your LAN is not creating any routing that could be used by bad guys over your internet connection.

There are other ways to bell this cat. But using non-routable protocols (Netbui in this case) is absolutely effective.
