Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-S200 won't run

I inherited an IBM Thinkpad that has a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-S200 drive. I can't find any software to run the DVD. I put a DVD in and nothing happens. Do I need software or a driver for this? Where do I find it? Thanks.

I downloaded the VLC media player 0.6.2(wxWindows interface) for my TP T20 which also had no software.

The download can be found at The software is offered under the GNU public license and is free.
