Guys, what were those boxes called back in the 90's and early 00's that were basically a sim that connected into an analogue port on the avaya and allowed outbound calls to the orange network to route over that sim because it was cheaper than calling from ISDN?

GSM gateway?

APSS/ACIS/ACSS-SME
not arrogant, just succinct.

Often called Premicells :)

They've evolved, often SIP to GSM interface boxes these days. Very popular in regions like Africa where the mobile network is more comprehensive and reliable than the fixed wiring PSTN or internet.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Fantastic Guys. @amriddle01 premicell was what i was thinking of, well done, a blast from the past!

@Sizbut / @Tommills, actually we have a customer in the UK who may as well be in Africa as they get no PSTN, or ADSL, but good 4G coverage. So was debabting some options.

Thanks guys.

Also called Fixed Cellular Terminals. Some can connect to ISDN ports but usually more expensive.

I heard a while that some mobile operators don't let you use premicells but this may well have changed.

Not so much a blast from the past we still have at least two customers running these things.

thanks @ipohead. wow @pepp77 i hadnt seen one in so long i had forgotten the name. A lot has changed in the industry since they were standard issue.

ACS IPOffice implement

I connected many Premicells back in the day to Norstars, Revelations, Inspirations etc. They did have a tendency to lock up and would need a power reset. I've got a few customers with IPO and premicell, in the uk I use a shortcode of 907 to route to ars with the premicell with a backup route to the pstn if the premicell fails. Seems to work pretty well.

You get as many free minutes and cheap rates on SIP these days, there's not much call for them anymore, except where SIP isn't an option :)
