Greetings,

Let me preface that I'm an I.T Systems admin with very little telecom admin experience. I've taken on a Systems admin position that also requires me to maintain this old PBX until we move onto something newer. The previous admins left almost no documentation on this system so I'm trying to learn as I go. I've got the basics down - adding extensions, resetting vm passwords etc. But now I'm again stuck at an issue.

A few days ago, we lost the ability to make adjustments to the system using the HiPath 4000 v3 web config console. Any changes that I try to commit are stuck at a "...waiting for server reponse" message. Not sure how to approach this, I'm about to schedule a time to reboot the phone switch hoping that works. Can someone offer advice on how to check the log files on the system to see why it's not responding to my changes or some troubleshooting steps I can take?

Thank you

One thing is certain: do not reboot the system. It may never come back online.
You are referring to "Assistant", which is a Unix-based application used for system administration, which runs independent of "telephony". The HiPath 4000 V3 hard disk supports two operating systems: Unix for the "Assistant" system administration tool, and "RMX", a proprietary operating system that runs Telephony. If there is a common problem between those two operating systems, such as a bad hard disk, your system may not boot from the hard disk, which means no dial tone.
I will post something else in a moment, just wanted to get that message to you ASAP.

Good Luck!

Sounds like the configuration manager is having issues and you need to restart the assistant, but I don't know how to do that in V3. The newer stuff makes it easier - you just press a button. If they give you access to Webmin under Base Administration in that version you should be able to go to the configuration manager and tell it to restart. note it has been a while - there may be more than one module for the config manager.

First, my responses assume that your HiPath 4000 V3 system: (1) is installed in the USA, and (2) is currently providing dial tone.

I assume that you can access Assistant via browser, but you cannot make any Moves, Adds, or Changes without encountering the "waiting for server response".
This problem sounds like Configuration Management (a subset of Assistant) may be limping.

Login to Assistant using your typical username and password. If successful, do you see a link to "Base Administration" in the LEFT column? If not, you are probably logged in with only customer-level access. If you do see "Base Administration", click it, then look for "Unix Base Administration" - also known as "UBA". Somewhere within UBA, there is a "Shutdown/Reboot" selection. Perform a REBOOT. This "Reboot" choice will reboot Assistant ONLY. There should be no effect upon Telephony.

If you do not see "Base Administration", did your former system administrator provide a maintenance-level username, such as "engr", or "rsca", or "rsta"? If so, and you know the correct password, either of those usernames should allow you to access Base Administration --> Unix Base Administration --> Shutdown/Reboot to reboot Assistant.

If an Assistant reboot does not resolve the problem, I hesitate to go further since you are a "newbie". Best case: Assistant may need to be re-installed. Worst case: your hard disk may need to be replaced. Either job should be performed by a maintenance-trained engineer. I highly recommend that you contact your service vendor. Your system may be able to be repaired via remote access (modem).

If you would like to move forward without contacting a service vendor, be aware that the HiPath 4000 is currently providing dial tone, and the problem is currently effecting system administration only. One wrong step, and your system can be dropped like David Blatt (Cleveland basketball sports reference). If you would like to proceed on your own regardless of my warning, then re-post, and someone will attempt to provide assistance.

Good Luck!

Thank you very much! I was able to restart the Web assistant using your directions above and I'm not able to make changes to my stations. You guys are great, I've posted a few questions here before and so far I've always gotten advice on resolving my problem.

also have same problem as above, how safe is it to restart assistant ?

Telephony does not need the assistant, it is just installed on another area of the hard disk.
Quickest way to bring it back is to do a soft restart and hope for the best

EXE-UPDAT:BP,ALL;
EXE-UPDAT:A1,ALL;
RESTART;

All above commands in capitals
Wait for 10 minutes or so and try to log on using the assistant
