Hi all,

I have a customer with an HiPath4000 V5, and some Optipoint and OpenStage (15, 40 and 60) HFA phones.

The customer started getting some complaints of the OpenStage users that in some calls, when the call is established all they hear is noise. If the user drops the call and makes another one, the problem doesn't repeat. But the problem can occur many times during the day.
I tried looking in the phone logs, but honestly I don't find anything.

I already checked the network (switches) and everything is, apparently, ok.

In the Optipoint phones, the problem doesn't occur.

I already tried different firmware versions for the phones, but the problem persists.

Do you guys know if this has been reported by any other user? Is it a known problem?

Thanks in advance.

Is the problem with outside calls or with all (including internal) calls.
If only outside then change the ISDN to circular - and test to see if one of the channels are noisy

hello sbcsu,

No, the problem only happens on internal calls, and between OpenStage phones.
If the call is between Optipoint phones, or between optipoint and Openstage, the problem doesn't happen.

By the way,

Here are the configs from one extension and the CGWB of the STMI card:

Have you made any recent broad configuration changes like an update or a loadware upgrade or anything?

Keep in mind when you are trying different firmware versions on older systems that some firmware versions need minimum hardware or software levels as prerequisites - like some really older phones may not be compatible with the new firmware, etc... Be careful to read the release notes before rolling out a new firmware version (they can also sometimes reveal problems with the firmware version you're currently ON too!)

That said, I'm speaking from knowledge today and not from back then. I started with V5 and am now on V7. There is a feature now called DMC (Direct Media Connect) that I don't know if was there on V5. If it is it will be at the bottom of the Basic3 tab in Assistant. DMC is like a peer to peer network. If 2 phones from inside the network call each other it can negotiate a direct connection between the 2 phones and thus free up system resources for other uses. If you have that enabled on your phones (if the box is on Basic3 is it checked?) try disabling it on a few of the most problematic phones and see if the problem goes away. If it does there may be some kind of problem with the call signalling on the network or something - like if you have remote shelves (CC shelf 17+) there may not be enough speech paths on the main system to handle the call volume or something along those lines....

If you turn ON DMC - Direct Media Connection it might resolve.

Or number smaller than 60.

CHA-SDAT for IP extensions DMCALLWD - DMC Call Allowed

Thank you very much donb01 and sbcsu!

I will try to activate DMC in CGWB. I already confirmed in SDAT that all phones are configured for DMCALLOWED. So I'm not really sure why in CGWB the value is 0!

I will let you know if there's any difference.

Hello donb01 and sbcsu!

I tried activating DMC in CGWB but the problem still occurs.
I'm running out of ideas, do you guys have any other idea on what can be causing the problem?

Thanks!

Have you upgraded the phones to the latest releases ?
Have you updated the phone system to the latest releases/loadwares ?

I was wondering... Will it make any difference if I remove the attribute DMCALLWD in SDAT from the extensions?

What does this attribute do exactly?

Thanks...

I seem to recall the "Idle Pattern" causing some issues for me many many years ago.
In your setup:
CHANGE-CGWB:CGW,40,10,GLOBIF,,,213,NO,0,10.1.1.254,4060,100MBFD,,,,,4061,0.0.0.0;
My idle pattern is set to 255.
CHANGE-CGWB:CGW,3,14,GLOBIF,,,255,NO,0,172.17.8.1,4060,100MBFD,,,,,4061,0.0.0.0,0.0.0.0;

213 is the default.

Thank you LoPath,

Do you remember what issues the "Idle Pattern" was causing?
What does that value do?

It has something to do with what is sent during unused time slots. I've looked through everything I can find online and offline and can't see any definitive reference for this.

From what I recall, we had noise on some phones. It was identified by a Siemens tech during a cutover in the wee hours of the morning. For him, it was a "duh". For me, it was a "huh?". So your mileage may vary.

From what I see in the documentation, that Idle Pattern has something to do with ALAW and ULAW. Since the system is in Europe, and we're using ALAW, the value that should be used is 213.

Do you still recommend changing it?

That sounds about right.... probably not the cause here.

The phone calls should use EF - expedited forwarding for payload.
