Hi all,

I have a problem where the hard drive on a single processor HiPath 4000 v5 went into defect. DEACT-DSSM:A1,1,,YES; followed by a HDCF card reseat followed by ACT-DSSM:A1,1,YES,,YES; recovered the hard drive partitions - controller 1 is active load device.

The problem is that the UNIX keeps booting and re-booting. I have a serial session to monitor the re-install and it seems to time out and dump and restart the process. Going on the 4th cycle. Can any one please provide some input on how to correct this?

Also, controller 6 (CF) shows BLOCKED BY AMO when I do DIS_DDSM; - can someone please provide input on this...

Thank you!

figured out the BLOCKED BY AMO... CF is in service now

revision to original question:

if I go to UNIX menu off service com port connection and select 1 for UNIX options... the 1st option at this point is reinstall from SCR (1st install) and the 2nd option is reinstall from installation partition... which is the better option from these 2?

will option 2 produce a patched UNIXware vs. using the SCR partition and having to repatch?

I have found that if this keeps happening then a new hard disk with a fresh install of everything is the answer.
Especially if you are depending on the UW7 for ACD or similar functions.
If you log on via Comwin and do STA-HISTA:SEARCH; do you see the Unix reinstalling and does it give any hints there, like not enough memory or something else.

hi sbcsu... at first, during the automatic re-boot of UNIX (ACT-DSSM:A1,1,,,,YES;) the STA-HISTA command resulted in UNIX messages such as: UNIX boot and load, Timeout watchdog warning, Timeout watchdog warning reached, dump analysis, boot and load, etc... (I'm not listing things verbatim)... I then stopped this after a few failed attempts and copied the files from CF back up to HD and then tried it again... nothing .... i then tried using the menu options on UNIX 1,2 & 1,1 via Serial connection to the Service port... nothing (no more messages after the inital boot and load)...

Hi,
When I get that I just give up and create a new Hard Disk from scratch.
Leave the Unix load up - you will see an 'error' in the HISTA to say 'successful'
You can then setup the ADS/SWU
Patch it up to latest releases and copy loadware over

thank you sbcsu... i have done this twice over the past few years and have notes but definately not a procedure I can do with my eyes closed. i have an HD, RLC DVD and the back-ups on the CF. I may have the master cf that came with unit, but it has been patched to latest about a year ago... all this to say is that I may need to hit you up for some more details... and I thank you in advance for your help!

will not be addressing this today, will have to schedule during a window

No problem CCMJGB
After posting I was thinking that I should have given you a step by step guide if needed.
But when you have time let me know.

The important things is that you get an up to date REGEN from the system.

Does the site have ACD setup - you could have a backup of that as well from UW7
It keeps the names in the ACD Assistant.

Thank you sbcsu, yes a step by step guide would be much appreciated! Thankfully, there is no ACD.

hi sbcsu, getting closer to scheduling the hard drive replacement... if I may ask, at your convenience, would you please help me out with the step-by-step... much appreciated.

... also ... I have 2 master cf's and an HiPath System Upgrade RLC DVD. The 1st Master CF came with the system so it most likely comes with the original V5 RMX & UNIXware that was installed on the system. Since then, the system was patched some time in 2013 with the latest RMX and UNIXware available at that time for the V5.

Question: Would it be safe to assume that the 2nd Master CF that was shipped out with the HiPath System Upgrade RLC DVD has the updated RMX and UNIXware already on it? In other words, if I were to boot from CF using the 2nd Master CF, would it install the latest RMX and UNIXware including patches onto the new HD? The reason I ask is that when I replace the HD, of course I'll need to install RMX/UNIX on the new HD and I want to see if using the newer media will avoid me having to patch stuff... both the HiPath System Upgrade RLC DVD and the new Master CF are labeled: V5 SMR1 SMP7... please advise.

hi again sbcsu... i got a hold of drive replacement documentation and reviewed it... it covers the hardware replacement and RMX re-build process... the RMX is good now... it also addresses the 2 options of UNIX recovery...

a) UNIX recovers automatically from SCR at re-boot (which the system attempted several times without success)
b) UNIX can be recovered manually using the UNIX menu (attempted and not successful)

being that rmx is working and unix is not, can you please advise on how to transfer a fresh UNIX copy from the Master CFs i mentioned in the previous post - the documentation doesn't address this scenario... thank you so much for your assistance sbcsu!

Hi,
Sorry about the delay, I was away on an install.
You need to log on to the Unix port on the front - lowest processor - serial port not modem port.
Use Hyperterminal or similar @ 38400 8-N-1
In the menu there you can install unixware from external partition

cool, thank you! i saw that option but i don't like to try things without checking... so, at this point will it automatically navigate to Master CF?

... also ... i put in a new post with a theoretical procedure - if you have time will you provide a thumbs up or down?

Hi ccmjgb
I looked at the other post and it seems good.
However try and use the unix menu to install from 'install medium' and see does that work for you.

Hi ccmjgb
not sure if you are sorted
I have uploaded
thread965-1744332
which may help
Although it is for V3 is is mostly the same
