The HP4K allows one to dial the phone without ever picking up the handset by just keying in the number. Whenever you do so it emits a beep after you hit the first digit.

Does anyone know WHY it does that? Is it somehow there to let you know you went off hook if you set a stack of papers on your phone or something?

More importantly, does anyone know how to make it stop doing it??!!

It's only mildly annoying when you on-hook dial from a standard phone, but when you are wearing a headset and trying to dial out with optiClient the dang beep is 5 times louder than the voice and it tends to hurt the ears. I find that whenever I dial a number I need to pull the headset away from my ear until I dial the first digit.

I asked several of my service techs and have gotten answers varying from "oh, does it do that, I never noticed" to "I have no idea where that is coming from", or just I dunnoooohhh....

I need to find a way to make it stop - there must be some system parameter somewhere that says "beep on first digit for on-hook dial" or something like that.

I have also not found a way in the optiClient to set the "system sounds" so they are quieter than the voice, or so they come out the PC speakers instead, so I haven't been able to address it from that angle either. I have to believe there are lots of people using this software, and I can't believe they are all putting up with it so there must be a way to shut it off!!

Thanks!

Not sure if you are still looking for info about this but here goes...
The beep happens after you dial the first digit.
The first digit is probably your dialling out access number like 9 or 0
When you dial that number you get dial tone (this is generated within the system and is meant to indicate to you that you have an open outside line)
If you ask your sys admin for the system to deactivate the dummy dial tone then you wont hear it anymore but it is a system wide parameter.

I'll have to look for the dummy dial tone and see if I can shut it off. I don't recall seeing that but I'll look closer!

The beep happens when you on hook dial regardless of whether the first digit is of an extension number, or the 9 for an outside line. I know the sound I'm hearing is not a splatter of dial tone though if that's what you're referring to. This is an intentional single loud beep of a much higher (and more painful) frequency than dial tone. My guess is that it's some type of alert tone to let you know you just pressed a digit and your phone may now be offhook, but I haven't been able to find anything with a description that matches "off-hook warning tone" or something like that....

Thanks for the reply.

I will check tomorrow on a site and come back to you but like you say "oh, does it do that, I never noticed" sounds correct!

Just as a confirmation - you do get beeps also for the next digits pressed, not only for the first one, right?
Afaik "key clicks" are automatically activated by setting ACOUSTID=USA in ZAND/OPTISET, so basically all US systems have them.
When starting to dial in on-hook state, the speaker or headphone is not yet activated by the system, so the method to generate the first click/beep is quite different.
For optiset/optipoint 500 there is no official way to deactivate the key clicks.
For HFA phones, there is an optional patch (activation flag S145 in V2.0, S39 in all upper versions) that does that.

I just looked at that parameter - yes, it's set to USA.

I only get one beep, and it's loud. So, for example, if I hit a 9 without lifting the handset I press the key and then hear a loud beep - about as loud as the beep when you press digits on a microwave, but when you're hearing a headset that's really loud - and THEN I get the dial tone. I do not get beeps for any of the remaining key presses - just one that I would call an "off-hook notify beep" when I press the first key.

If I pick up the handset I already have a dial tone. When I press the first key I hear a fairly quiet click/pop in the handset and then none of the other keys I press make any noise.

This happens hands free on the phone, and when I'm using the optiClient HFA. It does not happen when I'm using my SIP client (Jitsi) because that does not dial until you hit the Call button, and then it's silent.
