I recently bought a used 4000 for my lab and would like to reset or recover the engr password.
The system is fully functional and I can login to assistant as rsta and to AMO as root.
It is a simplex system running V2.0 R12.4.6 (P30252N4412BH0604).

Is there a way to reset the engr password without reinstalling Unixware?

Btw. there was a tool called PC-Dagen for the Hicom 200/Rolm 9200 to create an initial mml stack for new systems. Is there a similar tool to create a new amo stack for the HiPath 4000?

Theoretically, if you can login as root you should be able to issue this unix command:

passwd engr <enter what you want>

That should change the password.

Thanks, I tried that, but root login was disabled:
Code:
$ grep root /etc/shadow
root:*LK*8i66bi07rLstM:11576::::::
$

I even made a dd image of the hard disk and tried to edit /etc/shadow with a hex editor, but that didn't work either.
In the end I gave up, reinstalled Unixware and that solved the problem.

Interesting.... I've logged in as root on my V5.... I wonder why they would disable the login in V2.... Unless someone at your place did it or your vendor did it.

Either way you solved the problem!

Donb01, you are hallucinating! There is no root login to Unix on the 4K. The highest level of access is "engr". Now V6 is different. You can login as "root" in V6, but you are accessing SuSE Linux, not Unixware. Perhaps you are thinking of the Hicom 300, where you can access Unix IF you know the default root password.

There may be a way to access "engr" without knowing the password, by using an algorithm - but I do not know the process. SEN engineering may also create a new engineering level userID and password to use in the event that the engr password is lost.
However, the simplest method is to re-install Unix, as TKfan stated.

TKfan: are you a partner technician, or a customer? It appears that you have had some training. If so, which courses have you attended, where, and who was your instructor? Just curious.. Does "TK" mean Tennessee Knoxville?

Of course there is a root login in Unixware. It seems to be disabled by default,
but can be enabled by logging in as engr (who has root privileges anyway) and simply typing passwd root (or using scoadmin).

Professionally I am a network admin and also take care of two Bosch/Tenovis/Avaya Integral 33 (soon to be replaced by either two Hipath 3800 or one Hipath 4000 + IPDA).
The TK in TKfan stands for the German word TeleKommunikation.

I don't know if you're trying to correct me or not. Of course there is a root access to Unixware. But there is no root access to Unixware on the 4K, because, as you said, it has been purposely disabled. There is no need for anyone to enable it.

I could have sworn I've been in there a year or so ago - I never have a reason to go in there except on the rare occasion (9006) that some idiot forgets their password to get in, so I haven't bothered to try in ages.... Maybe it was rsca - I know I was in there... I didn't need to go in there either because engr does everything, but I'm just nosy that way.
