I would like to know what would cause high random access times on my SATA and IDE hard drives - all are 7200 WD's with 8mb cache. I have 875 chipset, 3.0 intel, and 1 gig memory. The time I'm getting from Sandra 2007 is 23ms!

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Could you provide a more complete picture?

Post the other access readings...

The only other figure I have is a read drive index of 52 MB/Sec.

I ran HD Tune and received the following info for my SATA dirve:

HD Tune: WDC WD1600JD-55FYB0 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 27.1 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 54.3 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 45.0 MB/sec
Access Time : 21.6 ms
Burst Rate : 67.4 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 3.9%

I'm getting a new drive today and want to make sure that I don't have any issues/bottlenecks.

Thanks for you help,
Peter

Well that is not optimum for a sata drive.

Is this connected to an onboard SATA controller?

And is there any of the unusual settings enabled for this drive.i.e. some chipsets have a access like an IDE drive or something similar.

I would get my mobo manual out(or download one) and go through the settings to insure that this is not a problem first.

It's connected to the Intel ICH5R chip onboard. RAID is not enabled. I have since connected a new SATA drive (wd 250g 16mb) and am getting 16ms with it after moving everything off of the 160g drive to it. I then formated the 160g drive and am still getting 22ms access time with nothing on it!

I will also try HDTach. My chipset drivers are up to date. Thanks for the links.
