Hi
My 30gig drive is 2 years old and emits a high pitch frequency noise. Is that an indication the drive is going bad? It works fine just the noise seems to be getting worse.

Thanks Leon

If your sure it is the harddrive then it is possible that..i guess they are called bearings.... might be going bad

Yes it is the drive. I have a rack system with multiple master drives. That is the only drive that makes the nose. If I insert a different master drive no noise. Looks like you are right. I will have to use that drive for a test OS in a different rack.

thanks

Leon

hello I presume your hdd will be bad soon. The sound is not normal.you might have a break down any of these days.Try and change the hard drive.

I will be getting a new drive. I have moved all of my critical data to a slave drive just the OS and program files are still on the drive. As soon as I get a chance I will purchase a new drive and go through the long task of reloading my programs. I contacted the manufacture of the drive it had a 3 year warranty, it is 3 years and 1 month old. I should have called them when the noise first started happening.

Thanks for all the help. This is my first week using tek-tips and 5 problems I have been having have been answered. Great forum.

Thank you
Leon

I will advice you to make a print of that hdd because sooner or later you will not have that hdd working.

Just my 2 cents, I just registered and I hope this helps. While I haven't tried it yet, there is a program I found on CNET a while back that will copy an exact image of your old disk to a new one. I think it was hdcopy or something. It had great reviews and supposedly copied everything so well it booted without issues. It might be worth a try. I've been through the whole reloading thing, what a hastle. Besides, you got nothing to lose now.

as long as the drive is still functioning and depending on which OS your using...there are quite a few ways to copy a harddrive
1. Ghost is a very good program
2. MaxBlast from maxtor will also do a good copy
3. if running 98 you can also do it from the windows command prompt(not true dos)as follows:
after new drive is in as slave (old drive c: new drive d:)
change drive letters if different than above..
goto start/run then type
xcopy c: d: /s/c/h/e/r/k
then hit enter.. the switches will allow to copy all files including attributes and system files. when complete put new drive in as master and reboot your computer...all programs and utililies will work as before..

I will give that a try. I usually just start fresh and reload all of my programs. I will look at all of the other options and even the dos xcopy a test.

Thanks you
Leon
