This is a description of my hand-writing, it would seem. I think my wife can usually read what I write, but good luck to anyone else.

Here is what gets me wondering:

When I write really small, it seems I can write more legibly.

Is it because:
a. I just focus more when writing really small
b. I am forced to be more careful when writing small
c. It's just the way it is.
d. Some other explanation.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to trying to quickly make yourself write neater?

I'd say that the problem is that I have gotten so used to typing so much of what I would normally "write" that I have just gotten lazy in handwriting, but I have always had sloppy hand-writing - for the most part. It probably began getting worse in college, in taking notes in class. [blush]

Any thoughts?

I'm also left handed. Our writing system does not do us any favors. I find that a decent pen helps and writing small. I think it's the concentrating that helps there.

Here in the UK (and probably elsewhere I imagine), Doctors' handwriting is generally regarded as the most unintelligible scribble of all. This would be worrying if it were not for our sainted pharmacists ability to read it and interpret it correctly, thus keeping us from harm.

We were taught italic script between the age of 8 and 11 and whilst it looks nice on the page it does rather put one at a disadvantage when having to use ballpoint pens in high school.

Although I have never heard of the Palmer Method, am I correct in thinking that someone once postulated a theory whereby one's chances of suffering a stutter/stammer were increased if a naturally left-handed person was coerced into using their right?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

I think the thing about a fountain pen improving your writing depends on just how bad your writing is & whether or not you've ever been taught to use one. Personally I really struggle with one &, although it's hard to believe possible, my writing actually gets worse!

Ther are more places for info about this method as well as others used by schools to teach cursive writing ( I think one was the Spencer Handwriting method).

Ken - I used to work as a dispenser in a community pharmacy, and then we still had many hand-written prescrptions. There are much fewer now which can only be a good idea.

One particular doctor was so bad that we used to stick his prescriptions to the wall with blu-tack and walk past them quickly. This seemed to help...

One other once left his car with the local garage, and teh mechanic came in with the note he had been left for us to translate.

They were good days!

Interesting (if frightening) sleipnir.

Fee - my ex-wife is a pharmacist and used to work round the Surrey/Hampshire borders area as a locum at one time. If you were around there in the early 80's (I believe you're Woking-ish now?), your paths may have crossed.

Fee - her name's Toni (nee Martin, then Cunningham, now something else). She has a good friend in Old Woking by the name of Sheila (Can't remember her surname, but she's Norn Oirish if that helps) who was also doing the locum thing in that area at the time. I'll ask her whether she recalls a 'Bob' (a la Blackadder perhaps?).

Oh, okay - NOW I get it! Actually, I wish I could watch the Black Adder stuff. Is that available online, now? It seems that I remember hearing something about BBC putting all their stuff online. Since I'm in the states, I only know him as Mr. Bean. Is Black Adder as good as Mr. Bean? I think that Bean is HILARIOUS! [SMILE]

IMHO, Blackadder is better than Mr Bean, but they are really two different genres. Mt Bean is largely slapstick, whilst Blackadder tends towards more plot-driven humour as well as excellent dialogue between the characters. As far as I know, the BBC has agreed a deal with youtube.com , but how that will work in practice I'm not sure. Try a seach for Blackadder on youtube and you'll get a flavour of what to expect.
