Hi !

How to know the total number of records in a file (Dataset on IBM mainframe environment) with out opening it in edit mode and scrolling all the way down?

When i type I for information of the data set it gives me all the information except the record count.

Any hints .... appreciate it.

Using 'bog standard' cobol indexed files you can open up the associated idx file and find this sort of info. I'm not a mainframe johnnie and I'm unsure of your fileset but hope this is of some use.

Good luck

Hi,

You can see the amount of used space. I you know what the size of the space is - the track, cylinders, etc. - you can calculate how many records are inside.

Tracks and cylinders depend on the type of device, blocks don't, so allocating with blocks can be easier.

In edit using spfse you can also give the primary command
L 999999

to be vast on the last line.
