Running Exchange 5.5 sp3 NT4.0 Sp6a and am receiving mail that is displayed as corrupted on backup-verify. Some users cannot identify what that mail is as it displays xxxxxx, or has no subject etc?

Help would be very much appreciated.

You could try running EDBUTIL.EXE with the switch /r to defragment and repair the database. It will attempt to correct the problem first, then remove the problem if not repairable. This can lead to a loss of data. However if it was corrupt it probable was no use anyway.

Look into EDBUTIL.EXE further because I believe it does its thing on a COPY of the database. This will double the amount to space used. Don't forget to stop the information store service before running EDBUTIL.EXE

CHECK THIS, I think the syntax the the command prompt would be edbutil /r /ispriv

I hope this helps. :)

Please don't do that :)

edbutil was in 5.0 not 5.5
/r is to play logs
/d is to defrag and /p is "hard repair"

What I would do is eseutil /g /ispriv /v /x >is.txt
Then depending on the results I would probably do a copy of the database with the IS stopped and then run
isinteg -pri -fix -test alltests

We were having difficulties with various people's mailboxes becoming corrupted due to hardware problems. The corruption was eliminated when we exported the mailboxes to a .pst file. You can export the individual's mailbox, delete all contents and reimport the .pst. Exporting the mail eliminates the corruption as the process will not export corruption. Some of the contents of the mail may be lost, but the mailbox becomes clean again. This procedure may be preferrable if you are unable to stop the exchange server for an extended amount of time to run the eseutil executable and if there are not that many affected mailboxes.

If you are going to export/Exmerge then delete the store (stop IS and rename priv.edb) and import to a fresh one. Must send a message to all users before Exmerge will see them in the new store. Dan
