Hi everyone,

I have a HP desktop computer with Me OS,256 MB Mem,60 GB hard drive that I partition with partiton magic 6 the C drive has 34 GB and the D drive has the balance that has backups and other storded data. I also have a Winsows XP Pro CD ROM.

I want to keep the Windows Me OS and all the downloaded programs and install the Windows XP Pro. What would be the best way to do this?

Thanks to all that respond.

You can probably install XP in the second partition, setting up a dual boot with XP's boot loader. I say, probably, as there have been problems noted trying to install 2k & XP into partitions created by older versions of PM.

That PM8 link could be a bit misleading. I think it's saying to make the second partition active so that XP will put its boot sector on the second partition (normal dual boot - ie, installing XP with ME partition active, XP would use the ME partition for its boot sector, and create its own dual boot menu) - then you have to use boot magic (or another 3rd party boot manager) to choose which o/s to boot.
While I do prefer dual booting operating systems to be independent, you need to know what you are getting by following instructions.
btw, your second partition has to be a primary one (not extended with logical drives) for the PM8 approach to work. If its extended, the standard M$ dual boot using XP's boot loader will still work (it will work with either).
may be of use.

Thanks Guys,

Your posts have been most helpful,I know now that I need to
check into this more before I dive into installing the XP Pro. Thanks again for your help.
