HHP 7550 Jam when no foreign object is present

I have an HP Photosmart 7550. Some time ago, while printing, it gave out a sound similar to "K-K-RAACK" and ceased to print. Since then it has generally refused to print, informing me that either a paper jam or ink container rack was jammed. This occurs when there is NO paper jam or any other foreign objects present, and the ink container rack moves, when manipulated, freely. Usually, when failing to print, it gives forth a sound similar to grinding gears. I have been able to print since but once or twice. These times were the result of opening the machine, vacuuming all, and manipulating mechanisms. It would print a single job, and then that was it. Nothing else. As this is mine only printer and I cannot easily afford another, I need to resolve this. Neither the manual nor the HP site offers any help. Any advice would be appreciated.

I am unable to find any solution for this, and turn to you, as I am one of the Computer Illiterati, and find myself stumped.

Lacking a solution, I would appreciate a recommendation for a printer that is reliable. I don't care if it does wonderful things - just want to print pages and the occasional images reliably.

Unfortunately, that printer has seen its better days, and either needs to be repaired or replaced. And the cost of repairing it can easily equal or exceed the price of a new one.

Well, I suspected as much. Thanks anyway, ski. This I find quite irritating, as the printer hasn't had 300 pages through it! And HP is supposedly the most reliable brand.... rrrrrr :-(

Any suggestions for an inexpensive printer that is RELIABLE? I do but the simplest things. Print letters, forms, etc., the occasional image. For me, the primary criterion for purchase of a new printer is reliability. All else is secondary, for if it doesn't work, what matter any other capabilities?

Grinding noises usually occur where gears are not turning properly together. If you're up to taking it apart there might be an adjustment. Also look if there is a piece of paper jammed inside where you can't see it.

(This happened to me at an ATM machine. Loud grinding noise, machine ate my card, and no money. I went into the bank and complained that I got ripped off for $100. Bank employees first gave me the stupid "yeah, sure you got ripped off" look. About a week later they refunded the $100).
