We have a v120 box and a second hard drive was installed. One hard drive has the OS and the second does not. We have the hard drives mirrored. When we tried to boot from the new disk, we got to the ok prompt. For some reason, it can't find the new disk.

Can't I do a boot -a? Do we need to fix the vfstab first before trying to boot on the second disk? Do I need to reinstall?

Did you run the installboot command to install boot blocks on the new disk and let the system know you have an alternate boot disk?

Oh, and you also have to use the setenv boot-device first_disk second_disk at the PROM prompt.

as default use-nvramrc?=false is false you have to change make true

at Ok prompt setenv use-nvramrc=? true

we installed the second hard drive and tried to boot the machine. We got to the ok prompt and this is where our road ends.

We were arguing that we should have edited the vfstab file before trying to boot the second hard drive. Unfortunately, we can't find our CD to boot off from.

what are the proper steps on installing a second hard drive, step by step?

at ok probe-scsi-all or probe-ide in order to see if the new installed hard drive on board.
if not, then

at ok prompt boot -r the hard drive has the OS then
at command line run this command
# devfsadm

I do not why you checking /etc/vfstab?????

I have a colleague who claims to be a Sun expert and he is insisting that we should have edited the vfstab file with the info of the new disk.

what did you use to mirror the operating system?

What bi is getting at is whether you used Disk Suite or Veritas or whatever to mirror your OS.

thanx for the help. we were able to get the cd and we used it to boot from.

thank you
