Hello,

My computer crashed while I had a indesign document open, and now I cant open or recover that file. Does anyone have any suggestions on opening it? Does Indesign make a temp or backup file anywhere that I could try opening? Any info will be much appreciated as I have spent alot of time working on this document.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, this is for CS2. I saw a post saying that 'CS3' could 'place' another indesign file within a file but looks like I cant do this with CS2. Any info would be great!

Thanks.

The InDesign program can start by either double-clicking on an INDD file or by starting the program from the Dock or Start Menu. When doing the latter, InDesign attempts to open whatever was open at the time of the last crash. Have you tried opening ID from the Dock/Start menu?

...ID might try to recover crashed docs the other way too (by clicking on another INDD (known to be good) file). Just try either way to see if it helps.

...recovery folders are found here:

-- On Mac OS X: Users/[User]/ Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 4.0/ InDesign Recovery

-- On Windows XP: Documents and Settings/[User]/Application Data/Adobe/InDesign/Version 4.0/InDesign Recovery

-- On Windows 2000: Documents and Settings/[User]/Application Data/Adobe/InDesign/Version 4.0/InDesign Recovery

...if you don't find anything there and indesign won't auto recover on opening the document it is good as gone, unrecoverable. You can try opening the document you have on another computer, if that fails then you will have to employ a data recover expert to see if the damaged file can be recovered...

...indesign automatically saves a temp file every minute...

...to add to my post above, it might be possible to fix corrupt indesign files using markzware ID2Q plugin...

Have you tried opening ID from the Dock/Start menu?"
-Yes, I have and still no go. It actually shuts down indesign when I try to open the file.

"On Windows XP: Documents and Settings/[User]/Application Data/Adobe/InDesign/Version 4.0/InDesign Recovery"
-Hmmmm,I do not see the Application Data folder under 'User'. I even tried to 'search' for the folder on the C drive but nothing came up. Any thoughts on that?

On another computer, I found it's InDesign Recovery folder. There were a few files in there with names like "DBTmp4816335093890". I tried to open them in Indesign but it didnt recognize what the file was. If I do find the Recovery folder on the first computer, how do I open these strange files?

Yes, I tried to open the corrupt file on the second computer but it didnt work.

Thank you for your insight so far. Any other thoughts?

It is probably not immediately helpful advice but now would be a good time to start to use a backup system. [bigsmile]

c:/Documents & Settings/ users then whatever your username is will have a folder, open that, then click Tools/Folder Options/File Types and set your computer to show Hidden Files, Click OK and you should then see it in your username folder.

...dbt files are temporary files used by indesign to recover crashed documents, most will be useless unless you are able to open the damaged document immediately after a crash...

...as you weren't able to then you have a slim to no chance of recovering that file...

...if the ID2Q plugin works then your lucky, otherwise you would need a data recovery specialist...

...golden rule is save with every happy move to limit your chances of having to re-work too much if a file does crash...

andrew

...sorry i meant ID2Q not Q2ID...

...but anyway, post a download link i will have a crack here...

andrew

post a download link i will have a crack here"

-I am uploading the indesign file now. Wow, thank you for taking the time to check it out. I really appreciate it! :)

Jeff

...no guarantees it will work, but worth exploring...

andrew

Arrrrg. It timed out while uploading. I will try it again.

Ok, it uploaded. Andrew, can you access it or do I have to send you a link or something?

Thanks,
Jeff

...sendspace would have generated a download link you need to copy and paste the download link in a message as mentioned above...

...go back in your web browser history if you have closed that page...

andrew

...yep, "2009 programme.indd", downloading now...

andrew

...good news is i can convert it quark 7 and then import into indesign cs3, problem happens when i try to save and reopen either as indesign or INX format...

...so will have to trial and error on getting bits into a new document and find out what element is causing the problem, could be more than one though, so will take a while until i have got to the point where it will save and reopen without any crashing...

...anyway, you will hopefully get something back to work with in CS2...

...a weird one, normally exporting to INX will clean up but there is still a problem somewhere...
