I have been having trouble getting my flash introductions to work on my website.

I dont know if the path I use is correct or not or what it is. When I go to my website from my computer, everything works fine. For everyother computer, it doesnt work. Can someone please tell me how to add flash correctly and save it so that it actually works?

if you wish to view the web site it is:
thank you.

I appreciate any help.
John P.

Hello John!

First of all, pathes to your flash files are incorrect!
The only correct path is for the flash called enter.swf - src="enter.swf". All other flash files have absolute path to your computer, like src="C:\My Documents\ultranet.swf".

1) you must put all your flash files into directory where your site is;
2) change file path to document relative (like "enter.swf");
3) don't forget to upload flash files to the remote server.

Now it must work :)

Good Luck!

I'm sorry but, I was wondering if you or someone could clarify something for me.

1)The directory where my flash files are is the directory on my computer where I have my html. dreamweaver pages, etc.?

2)if I can only have relative names like enter.swf what happens if I have a little logo on my homepage. How would I name that?

I appreciate the help and even more appreciative of your time.

Thank you again

John

Hi John!

I see that we have to start from the very beginning (don't hate me if I'm wrong -:))

First of all, you have to define site. You are creating entire site not just one page, aren't you? So now we have to define site:
1) Site > Define Sites... > New. Enter all necessary info. Set the path to the folder on your computer where you keep files of your future (or already existing) site. DW will create site cashe for faster access to files and some features.

Now you can build your site, create new and edit old files. One important thing - all files that you use must be within this directory where you keep your site. You must have all you images (logos, flash, etc.) in the site directory. You must be able to browse them in the Site Files window.

When you need to insert some image (or any other object) DW normally inserts it if this image is within your site root (directory). In this case DW makes path to this file relatively to the site root (like "enter.swf"). If you want to insert file that is out of your site root directory DW asks if you want to save it in the site root, you must save it in the site root directory. Otherwise DW makes path to this file relatively to your computer, like C:\some_folder\some_image.gif

Thus, the rule is to create/define site and keep all files inside the site root.

Now I'll try to answer to your questions.
1) I can't answer to your first question because I don't know where you have files on your computer, the only person who knows is you.
2) I hope that what I wrote above will help you to understand how to name path to your logo. If not - say and I'll try to be clearer. (it must be the same as with "enter.swf", something like "logo.gif")

Good Luck!

Thank you for your reply.

I have started to re-build everythign with everythign you told/taught me.

However, after I re-created my first page I wanted to start on another page. So, I clicked File>New.

Now, on this new page, do I define it again?

-John

Hi John,

No, you have to define site only once. When you create new page the only thing you have to do - save this file in your site directory, like your first page.

To be sure that your file will be saved in the site directory do File > New File > Give a name to this file > then double click on the name of this file to open it.

Good Luck!

I don't want to sound like a chump, but as a 'web site designer', wouldn't you want to use your own Flash buttons.
I have made a few sites and the thought of using buttons made by other people, especially ones that came with a program would not have crossed my mind or other fellow designers either. Are those just there untill you make some?

Yes, until I fully learn everything from dreamweaver to flash it is only then that I will put up custom buttons. I didn't take offense to that so, it is ok. It is kind of cheap but I was hoping no one would point that out. I am only 17 and have been asked to make web sites for local businesses for pocket change. With school and my other ral employment, it is difficult for me to self teach...me. (That last terrible display of English was on purpose..if yu saw Austin Powers I then you would know what I am talking about, sorry).

I might have a question soon about making buttons so, watch out for me.
