I just began getting an error trying to read my 'g' drive, which is my CD drive. I get the message : g:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready. I have tried many different CDs and run through the diagnostics CD that IBM provides. The PC is an Aptiva. Can someone help me ?

Can you see the drive as a CD in Explorer??
You may want to remove the CD from Device Manager and re-installing. Worse comes to worse, you can always load DOS drivers.

Yves

open the cover on the pc check all of the cable connections,
if they are ok then reinstall of of your drivers.

Unfortunately Sharabi, the most common PC component to fail is the CDROM drive. Presuming no-one has been fiddling inside the case and bumped a cable loose, you might make sure there are no odd DOS CD drivers loaded in config.sys or autoexec.bat and try a lens cleaner. Sometimes helps but I find the usual solution is a replacement drive.

I Have to agree with Sshaker....Most likely your CD-ROM drive has failed. One way to check this is to see if your computer BIOS see's it during power up of the system.

Also see if when booting up with a w98 boot floppy with cd rom support, the CD rom is found. If this, in addition to a regular w98 startup, yields no CD rom drive being found, then you have a harware problem. You may try moving the CD drive to another ide controller channel or moving from slave to master (or vice versa).

Paul
Paul J.
