Hi

I need to start a passive ftp session across my firewall. Can anyone help me with the ftp commands to accomplish this?

I have tried the following which does not work:

ftp> quote PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode (100,1,1,20,102,101)
ftp> put filename

I get unaqble to create the data connection message.

Any help would be great.

Is the firewall allowing ports 20 and 21 to pass through? It's quite common for people to allow port 21, which lets you give the FTP commands, but forget to allow port 20, which is for the actual data transfer.

Sorry, I should have explained! The firewall will not allow incoming requests with a destination port of 20 or 21 passed it. We do not host an ftp server on the secure side of the firewall. The ftp client is inside the firewall and the server is on the outside.

I know that the way around this is to use passive ftp but none of the documentation I have read explains how to control a passive session.

I've got to admit that I don't know too much about PASV mode, apart from the fact it exists! Is your firewall allowing ports 20 & 21 into the network to your particular IP address? I think that you may need to do this for things to work OK.

hi there...
in my case... just typing passive works..
afaik,

Are you using a microsoft dosprompt ftp-client? Because the data-connection is initiated from the client in passivemode the client has to support this. Ftp in windows95 doesn't as far as I know.

(If you insist on using microsoft ;-) try a ftpclient like wsFTP or bullitproofFTP. I know they work in passivemode.)

Thanks Guys,

The problem was with the client - it didn't support passive mode!

Thanks for your input.
