Hello, I am new to the POS Terminal world and my question, A friend of mine recently bought some Radiant POS P1210 Terminals and he asked me to install Windows XP SP3 on the machines. I could not find a drive so I removed the harddrives and installed the Operating System that way. Now when I put the harddrive back into the terminal and turn it on, everything seems to be ok until when it gets ready to boot. It locks up at this point. So I restart the terminal and and use Windows "Safe Mode" function. When it starts it give me the list of drivers and then it stops at that point and nothing else happens. Could this be that I need to update the drivers since I originally did not install the OS on the terminal but a windows box or is this a bigger issue?

What can I do to get the machine running Windows XP so that way we can move on to the next phase of installing Aloha?

Any thoughts??

You didn't actually say that you're using Aloha. But since it's a Radiant terminal, I'm going to assume that you are. Furthermore, I'll assume you're using Aloha TableService. Finally, I'm assuming that these terminals also came with a BOH server with Aloha already installed on it.

The easiest thing would probably be to just go ahead and reformat that drive, then use an external USB optical drive to install Windows directly on the terminal. If you're PXE-savvy, you may also be able to install that way, but I'm not sure if the 1220's have that option in the BIOS.

You also may want to grab the drivers off of the Radiant website and put on a flash drive, or simply connect the terminal to the internet and download them from there manually.

If your friend is running an Aloha version previous to 6.5, you HAVE to make sure that you don't install Internet Explorer 7 on the terminals. So if you've got an installer with SP3 rolled in there, and Internet Explorer 7, you can't use that installer. I made this mistake on a BOH server installation, and had to start over.

Once you have one terminal set up with Windows and the drivers for that terminal, you'll want to make an image of that terminal. You can use Hiren's boot CD, which includes Ghost. Save an image of the terminal's drive onto a flash drive. Then you can use Hiren's and the image on that flash drive to speed up installation on the other terminals.

A few things to keep in mind after all that:

1. Name the terminals using a string with a number at the end. (e.g. "TERM1", "TERM2" and so on).
2. Don't use DHCP. Use a static IP, and use a static IP on the server, too. I use 192.168.20.x. If your friend has a separate office computer and/or offers free wifi to guests, make sure the POS system is on a separate subnet!
3. Turn off DHCPMediaSense on the server. This can be found in the registry—you can Google how to do this. I'm not sure, but you may need to turn this off on the terminals too.
4. The installer for Aloha should be somewhere on the server.
