I have a Compaq Presario (5WV280 if you really care) that is about 2 years old and has a 30G ATA-33 HD onboard. I am thinking of building a new rig in about a year, and I'd like to buy a new HD will will eventually go into my new computer, but for the next 12 months or so will be a second storage drive.

So, my question is, if I buy a brand spanking new 100 or 133 HD, do I need to put in a new controller card in my old computer, or will it still run on my ATA-33 controller (not at 100 or 133 speed obviously). Do I need to buy a new controller too or just a new HD?

Any help appreciated!

You do not need a new controller Card. The New HDD will run happily at ATA33.

Hard Drives are backward compatible - so your new ata100/133 drive should run quite happily at 33.
