I have a windows 2000 DC from a remote office that had an array slot go bad. I backed up and restored the server after recreating the drive array. The restore of data seemed succesful and I could log back into it ok. The server was offline for a week until someone over in that office finally hooked it up for me when I shipped it back to them. When they booted it up I was unable to connect to it remotely. They tell me an error said to start it in Directory Services Restore Mode. In that mode it comes up ok and I can connect to it remotely. Then when I restart again it just gets stuck at "Preparing Network Connections" and never gets past that. I wanted to demote it, then re add it as a domain controller, but dcpromo doesn't run in the safe mode, it just tells me to restart in Normal Mode. Thoughts?

so can one remove AD altogether in "Direcory Services Restore Mode"?

If you have a backup of the system state you can log in under directory services restore mode and restore just the system state and see if this resolves the issue. Has worked for me before when I trashed my directory services/security accts database playing with ADPREP.
