I have never added a phone on a Lucent switch and really need some help... here is what I have: From the LOC(phone jack), to station cables to house pairs in a subcloset, to house pairs to (what I assume) are switch/trunk/station #'s, which then go into the switch. I have toned everything out, so the wiring is correct, so
The switch/trunk # says it is on 98(green pair). So we are using a windows based switch program to perform adds/renum, adding lines etc, but I have no idea where to start in the software. I hope I am semi clear with my question. Thank you

The easiest way to add a phone is to look for an open spot on one of the modules that accept an extension phone jack (RJ45). This would be on a 408 GS/LS MLX module or 008 MLX module. The open spot may already exist in the system - so all you would need to do is plug the phone extension jack in. By phone jack - I mean the wiring that runs from the wallplate at the phone's location to the wiring closet by the phone system. This wiring may already exist on your phone block. If you can find it - you need to put a RJ45 connector on it using standard ethernet 568A color scheme and just plug it in to an empty port. If you are running a new cable - use Cat5e cable and run it from the phone location to the phone system location. If you have a Magix system - then it gets a little more complex. After plugging the phone in - if it works then you are all set and just need to check that it is programmed the way you want. If not - then maybe the port is busied out. A "print all" report from the system is always very useful to see exactly what you have and identify slot/port locations that have nothing plugged in.

Thank you, so you are saying in the sub closet, they have the LOC/station cables and a patch panel, and all I have to do is run a patch cable from LOC to a possible open port on the patch panel? If that works, how do we program the phone with the desired extension on it?

First see if you have an open port available on one of the modules. If not, you may need to add a module and/or expansion cabinet. It would help if you indicated what kind of system you have. The wires in your closet may or may not go to a patch panel. They may just go to a wiring block - in which case you would have to make a jumper with an RJ45 end - just like the rest of the extensions. You can copy the wiring sequence from a plug for an existing extension. Once you can plug a cable in for the phone - you can simply dial another extension with it - and that extension will show you what the extension of the phone is. You can use system programming to renumber it to an "open" extension number - but my guess is all ports are probably already set-up with whatever numbering scheme you currently have - just not used. The "print all" report would provide you info on how your extensions are currently configured.
