In an earlier thread, I was enquiring about creating a wired network between two PC's approx 3 metres apart. One is on XP Prof, the other on W2K. I bought this bit of kit:

....... in the hope that all would be easy from here on in, but alas, still only one of the two PC's can be on the internet at a time.

Presupposing that I did buy the correct equipment, what else do I now need to do so that both PC's can share a braodband connection to the internet?

Kind regards

COB

Are using an ethernet modem/router or a USB one (possibly supplied by your ISP)?

The 'main device' that you have purchased seems to be soley a network switch (minus a built in modem and router).

If you have a USB modem I believe you can only share the internet connection using ICS, unless you purchase a router that allows for a USB connection into it.

I think more detail is needed about how you have already used this equipment and any other in an attempt to connect all pcs to the internet.

Thanx Sunil

The modem is supplied by my ISP and is connected to the internet via coax cable. The interface between modem and PC is either USB or NIC. There are 8 ports on the network switch, all similar without any words about uplinks, and the pictorial instructions (a few words also) suggest that either a maximum 8 pc'c can be linked together, or 7 with the other connection being given to the modem. Currently I have 3 ports used by two PC's and a modem. The USB connection to the modem is not being used.

On the box of this switch, it definitley mentions connecting broadband internet, but I need to know what settings to use on both machines please.

Kind regards

no idea what hw you bought, cant find any kit on that page.

buy a router or install ics (internet connection sharing).

Sorry the page seems to have time expired and you have to return to the home page and search again. Here are the details:

BELKIN OFFICE KT
Product Code - 857016

Includes:

4x Ethernet 10/100 PCI Cards

8 port professional network switch

4x 8metre Fast Cat5 patch cables

Share files and Internet connection

with upto 8 PC's

Easy installation with Belkin software

Belkin Lifetime warranty

Belkin free Technical Support

The printing on the box suggests that its intended use is for internet connection, with the word broadband being bold.

Can anyone talk me through the settings required on both machines please.

Kind regards

COB

give the kit back and get a cheap broadband router(pref. with switch, around 30.- euro).

if you cant/wont then...

1.connect modem to pc1 networkcard(nic, use the one you mainly go in internet with).
2.install/add a 2nd nic in pc1
3.install ics (internet connection sharing) on pc1
4.connect 2nd nic either with switch or direct (use a crosslinkcable) with nic of pc2.
5.set up ics client on pc2

pc1/nic1 = dhcp (dynamic host config. prot.)
pc1 nic2 = 192.168.0.1 (default ics)
pc2 = dhcp

get a decent desptop firewall (i.e sygate/kerio/zonealarm)

how 2 set up ics/networks... page is in german but maybe it helps you.

the easiest way is give back the crap you bought, get a cheap router 2nics and 3 patch cable.
