Hi people,

I just got the 2900XL switch from ebay. All the lights were green and passed the self test according to Cisco's guide. But I can't connect to the console port. I looked around and tried using all possible settings but still just give me a cursor and does nothing when I press enter.

The same console cable works with my 2525 router. They share the same pinout and should be working with the switch. Please advise why is that. I don't know the IP of the switch, everything seems fine.

I tried connecting to my switch directly using static IP of 10.0.0.2 and try to ping 10.0.0.1 (Found that someone said it's the default) But didn't help.

I tried pressing the mode button before powering up the switch and release it after port 1 lights out for a sec or 2. Then try using HT again but same thing, just the blinking cursor.

I really need some advice and help here.

Thanks alot people.

Calvin.

Hi G.

I tried the link you sent and take off pin2 and 7 but still no luck. It still works on the 2525 router, but the switch didn't do nothing.

How likely is that a console port is dead? Will static kill it? I don't recall any except putting the port face down on carpet, but I couldn't have kill it can it?

Something weird is that all port lights are functioning normally but the console just won't do. People who sold me the thing said that they tested it and it works before sold it to me, but I have no way of confirming that 'cause they can say all they way.

Let me know please if you have other solutions.

Thanks,

CAL.

Static can kill any part of an electronic equipment. I would doubt that the console is bad. Its possible but I doubt it.

Are you using the blue cisco console cable with the built in DB9? or are you using a black rollover cable with a DB9 to RJ45 connector?

Have you tried jiggling it around and pushing in tightly. Have you checked the pins in the RJ45 console port to see if they are all intact?

Some people change the data rate on the console port. I don't know why, but they do.

Try setting your comm port to different data rates.

You may also try Com Inspector from simplecomtools.com; this software tries multiple comm port settings automaticaly. This is especially useful when you are trying to talk to a device and you do not know hoe the serial port is configured.
