hi!..well my problem is that whenever i work on winXp suddenly the system restarts. and when booted again the system screen displays strage colors across the monitor (like a motif) and freezes.

I checked my VGA cards & re-installed the driver too. But i dont think the problem is an hardware issue, because windows98 on the same machine works fine. (I have dual booting & i share the D:\ drive with both the OS's)..

i wud be very glad if anyone cud suggest the problem..i really appreciate any input..

My PC -> PIII 550MHz, 128MB RAM, SiS 8MB VGA
Disk- 3 partitions , C: win98, D: data, C: WinXP(hidden)

thnx!
Mur.

I am guessing yur system is set to restart you system after an error, switch this off by:

Right Click on My Computer > Click on Properties > Click on the Advanced Tab. Click on the Settings button under the Start-up and Recovery heading. Untick the Automatic Restart Box and then click on apply and OK.

Now next time the error occurs post the details of the error here.

Also I'm curious that you have 2 C:\ drives on your machine.

Finally have you downloaded a windows xp specific driver for your display card?

Any feed back is appreciated.

as long as one of the c drives is hidden it will only be visible during boot for selecting the os to be used. Than at that point what ever os is used the other should be hidden. SHOULD BE. Not saying that will work 100% of the time I have had it fail on me a few times but then again i have had it work many times also.

thnx for the reply.. well i did as greg said. so this time it d'nt restart but it freezed. no error was given.

well my VGA card is a SiS6326. Windows automatically installed the driver for that. but its not a unique driver it shows the driver as SiS53XX/6326 (5328 i suppose!)..

Also i think i came across the problem. I've been testing my ASP scripts on IIS lately. thats when problems started to arise. there are some corrupt files in C:\inetpub\ folder & i cant copy anything from that folder. it freezes. is it bcos of a bad sector?

thnx!!!
Mur.

ps: well my disk particualars shud be corrected as,,
[win98 C:\], [data D:\], [winXP E:\]
when win98 is booted [win98 C:\] is active , [winXP E:\] is hidden
when winXP is booted [winXP C:\] is active , [win98 E:\] is hidden

Take a look at the event viewer, it should show an error(s) at the time of the freeze. You can see the event viewer by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer.

Take a look at the application and system sections.

There is a new virus around which automatically restarts your PC. Make sure you have the latest virus definitions
