Hi all, I have a Windows9x application that refuses to run correctly on Windows XP. If the application is installed on a Windows 98 machine and then this machine is upgraded to Windows XP the software works! So in the process of upgrading the windows, certain settings are exported and then imported in the Windows XP. Unfortunately I have to be able to install this software on a fresh Windows XP machine because it is now virtually impossible to install Windows 98 on new hardware.. I'm looking for a program that could analyze the setup of this application and make it compatible with XP! Here is a log file of the Windows 98 Installation. With this file you see what the installer does. Thanks for your help in advance!!

Have you tried running the Application in Compatibility Mode set to Win98? Right Click the application's executable file, and select Properties, then go to the Compatibility Tab, and set it to Win98?

If not, could you perhaps run your application in Microsoft's Virtual PC on Win98?

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Running the application in windows 98 compatibility mode doesn't work. The installation would have to be windows 98 compatible. I would like to avoid using a virtual machine

Thanks for the reply!

I tried running the setup in windows 98 compatibility.

This leaves you with, for you, the unpalatable option of running your application in a Virtual Machine, or looking for another more compatible application.

One suggestion that might work but would be a bit time consuming and fiddly is that if you have this application running successfully in an upgraded XP, you may be able to copy the working applications folders and registry settings manually to the current XP, or at least compare the entries.

Have you tried running your application as an Administrator via the right-click "Run As" command.

There is this diagnostic path to follow if you like.
