Well, the plot thickens. We have a two carrier Legend 7 v9 that has been running fine for quite a while. We're finally at a point where we need to add additional cards, and it seems that any time I add cards to slot 10, it causes problems with the card in slot 9 (MLM). I've had both an 008atl and an 016trr in the slot. They run fine for a couple of hours (the whole system seems fine), and then any time a call hits the voice mail, it gives the 'transferring to an operator' message, and transfers.

Could things work better re-arranging the DS1 cards and the Merlin Messaging? Is the problem more likely the Merlin Messaging, or the backplane/slot 10? What should I do next to troubleshoot, or is it a lost cause?

I assume you're renumbering the boards and all the routine stuff. Q1: is the inventory showing properly? Try moving the messaging module to the last position, a bit of a hassle, but might help.

I'm powering down for every card swap (carrier 1, then carrier 2, change card, power on carrier 2, then carrier1). I let it come up, and then I do a board renumber. If you think always having the MM as the last slot/card might improve things, I'll give it a shot. I hadn't thought of that option. While I'm at it, is there any benefit to splitting the DS1's between carriers?

just a thought....what is the vintage of the power supplies. If they are not the C1 version..you might
consider upgrading them.

They are both C1... did that before adding the MM card. Thanks for the thought tho.

Go to Avaya's Documents and look over the POCKET REFERENCE on UNIT LOADS.

I think you will find that it is verboten to have two
100 D's and a Mer Messaging in the same carrier.

They just pull too much power.

I agree with merlinman, verboten(forbidden)is a good way to put it. Split the T-1's and make sure you have 391C power supplies.

I've never seen anything about not having two t1's and a MM module in the same carrier. I knew you couldn't have more than two DS1 cards in a single carrier, but I'm almost at the 'trunk' limit anyway. The only 'install' doc I could find was for a magix, and based on the unit load in there, the t1' cards are '0'. Thanks so much for the suggestion! I'll see if I can find that pocket reference.

Actually, I just looked at Unit Loads and that would not be the issue.

I will try to find the rule about not having 2 T1''s & Mer Mesg in the same carrier, (I think Bell Labs came up with a reason) and share it.

It still seems like a reasonable idea to me to try. And forutnatly, given current layout, shouldn't be too much re-programming. I just hate the thought of not being able to add cards, or having to get a new expanson cabinet and take the whole thing down off the wall to try, when it may or may not be the problem.

I can't seem to find where I read it at, but somewhere I read that the processor, merlin messaging,DS1/DCD/INA, all draw -5V. And thus, no more than 3 should be installed in one carrier. I did read in this in one of the manuals, I believe it's the maintance manual addendum for the magix 1.5. Did you happen to go on your test ports on your 391C1 and see if your getting the correct readings? Probably not the issue considering your cards wouldn't be working at all, but it's takes only a minute to check.

I haven't checked PS voltage, but if that sounds familiar, then it may be a contributing factor. I'm going to try to do some downtime on Sunday to re-arrange things, and see how that goes.
