Windows 2003 LAN with Exhange and a T-1 line comming in also Winxp pro SP2 clients. I have ID'd the routers and other misc devices in the closet but have a few unknown's. Maybe some have more than one ip bound to it?

I have serveral internal ip's that I cannot determine what they are. They respond to icmp and have requested DNS (that's how I discovered them) but not to telnet or nbtstat. Since they requested DNS, but do not repond to nbtstat, its seems they are not windows machines but something else.

What else can I do to try to figure out what they are?

if you use "nmap" it has an option to "fingerprint" i.e. *try* to discover what sort of device it is...

I just used lanspy and most are jetdirect cards.

One device is not a jetdirect and has telnet running. How can I get it to display a banner or something other than just "Login:" ?

I have the outside ip of our router but not the inside ip. There was a way, which I have forgotten, to get a router to give up its mfg using telnet. Could someone help me out here?

Hi
To discovered IP and names in LAN I often using
Angry IP Scanner
This is free program, which discover active host and their names in local network.

jetdirect cards - seems like printer's servers. You should be open it from ie or firefox - using active ip adress.

with regards
Rafal

Most of the times they are printserver of unconfigured switches or may a PABX.

If you do a scan, you will see the MAC adress, do a search on the fist 6 digits of your mac id then you'll find the brand name. Maybe this could help you further.
